Welcome to the CBM India

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one of the market-based mechanisms defined under the Kyoto Protocol to assist developing countries in achieving sustainable development and to assist industrialised countries to meet their Green-House Gas (GHG) emission reduction targets agreed under the Protocol.

India is the third largest producer of coal in the world. If effectively recovered, coal-bed methane gas associated with coal reserves and emitted during coal mining could be a significant potential source of energy in coal-rich but often economically poor regions. Utilisation of Coal-Bed Methane (CBM) would introduce a clean energy source and reduce local pollution and emissions of greenhouse gases. CBM projects are often capital intensive and need additional support from internationally agreed mechanism like CDM.

Overall Objectives:
CBM is a clean energy option which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and can meet local energy demand. The broad aim of this project is to promote CBM utilisation in India. The specific objectives are to:

Evaluate the attractiveness of CBM projects under CDM
Enhance the utilisation of CBM through the use of the CDM to obtain additional finance
Increase capacity and create greater awareness among CBM project developers
Reduce emissions of GHGs
Carry out one case study addressing the above issues.
